MOUNT. ABUNE YOSEF

Description.

Welcome to Abune Yosef, a breathtaking sanctuary nestled in the Ethiopian highlands, where nature's marvels unfold in a delicate dance of diversity and beauty.

Here, amidst a tapestry of bush and woodland, montane dry forests, afro-alpine grasslands, and evergreen forests, lies an ecosystem teeming with life. Home to at least 43 mammal species, including seven endemics, and over 221 bird species, with nine marked as threatened, Abune Yosef is a haven of biodiversity.

The iconic Ethiopian wolf, revered as the rarest and most endangered canid globally, roams these lands alongside herds of gelada baboons, the sole grass-eating baboons worldwide. Leopards, grivet monkeys, and a myriad of other creatures share this habitat, painting a vivid portrait of wilderness.

Yet, Abune Yosef's significance extends beyond its terrestrial inhabitants. It boasts the second-highest bird diversity and endemism levels in Africa, sheltering nine threatened bird species, including the majestic bearded vulture. Witnessing these avian wonders in flight is a spectacle unto itself.

Traverse through varied vegetation zones, from temperate belts to alpine heights, adorned with ancient junipers, African wild olives, and towering giants like Rim Gedel, Big Zigit, and Small Zigit. Amidst this natural splendor lies the ancient village of Tigu Kebele, where farmers cultivate barley, onions, potatoes, and lentils, sustaining themselves amidst nature's bounty.

Embark on the unforgettable journey to Abune Yosef, where every step unveils a new wonder, every sight a testament to the marvels of creation.
