LALIBELA

Description.

Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled in the heart of Ethiopia, is renowned for its extraordinary rock-hewn churches, carved out of solid volcanic rock. These remarkable structures, built in the 12th century under the patronage of King Lalibela, stand as enduring symbols of faith and architectural marvels.

The Lalibela churches, also known as the “New Jerusalem,” consist of 11 monolithic structures, each with its own unique design and significance. From the awe-inspiring Bete Giyorgis (Church of St. George), shaped like a cross and carved into the ground, to the intricate carvings and frescoes of Bete Medhane Alem (Church of the Saviour of the World), Lalibela’s churches showcase the ingenuity and craftsmanship of ancient Ethiopian artisans.

Legend has it that King Lalibela was inspired to build these churches after a divine vision, seeking to create a “New Jerusalem” for pilgrims who could not make the journey to the Holy Land.
